A Nabaki Afrika Legacy Project

Why Sacred Space Exists
Sacred Space began with a clear intention: to protect a rare pocket of biodiversity within one of Africa's fastest-growing cities, while providing a minimally invasive space for holistic, sustainable and conscious living.

Sacred Space has been made possible through the vision, generosity and long-term commitment of Nabaki Afrika and its founders.

An investment in the collective future of people and planet—created through care, collaboration and the belief that different possibilities can be built together.
People • Planet • Possibility
Designed with intention, built with love and offered to the future.

It brings together:
nature and human wellbeing;
ancient wisdom and evolving possibilities;
conservation and conscious change;
learning and direct experience;
personal transformation and planetary responsibility.

The original intention remains clear: to protect a rare pocket of biodiversity while providing a minimally invasive space for holistic, sustainable and conscious living.

Our Story

Almost three decades ago, Hamish and I bought this land as one property: our home on one side of the road, and eleven acres of coastal bush bordering the mangroves on the other. We later subdivided and built a warehouse for our then fledgling company, Nabaki Afrika, which we had founded in 1994. Â We imagined that one day the remaining forest might become a small, low-density development of environmentally sensitive homes.

But the land had other ideas.

For years, I walked here almost every evening with my dogs, usually as the sun was setting amongst the giant baobabs. Somewhere along the way, those trees began to gently seed a different vision in me.

Sacred Space asks a simple but important question:Â Â
How can a city continue to grow without losing its relationship with nature?

The Philosophy
Sacred Space is guided by a simple sequence:
Â
Protect. Restore. Re-member. Re-generate. Re-imagine.

At the heart of all of this is Living With Awareness.
Paying attention to ourselves, one another and the living world around us. Noticing before acting. Observing before intervening. Understanding before designing.

The Re-
The language of Re- runs quietly through Sacred Space: Re-connect, Re-awaken, Re-member, Re-store, Re-generate, Re-new, Re-vere, Re-spair and Re-imagine.

It speaks to returning, recovering, renewing and bringing back into relationship what has become separated.

Re-knowledge invites us to recover ways of knowing through nature, ancestral wisdom, observation, experience and learning.

We are not trying to return to the past.Â
We are learning from what came before to imagine what comes next.Â
We are a part of nature, not apart from it.
